Pathways

When Winter comes, and darkness falls

Somber thoughts await us

Of choices made, pathways taken

And dreams oft times abandoned

We tread the way of least regret

Huddling there for warmth

Yet hoping that one day we’ll find

The road has led us home

Hope sometimes comes, unexpectedly

Wrapped in Winter’s coat

To cast off cruel persuasion

And live life as we should

Through twists and turns

Spring’s Summer passes

Bittersweet moments

Along the path are strewn

Visionary hope, painfully torn

Like Autumn leaves has fallen

Sometimes doing the one right thing

Remains all that’s left to do

Caring for the dearest ones

To thine own self be true

Priorities now set and cast

And reduced to precious few

Overwhelmed by melancholia’s grip

The path ahead grows dim

Clinging to proffered friendship’s hand

But mourning whimsy’s twilight

Reaching out or reaching in

The answer seems the same

Disillusioned feet the road had led

To the place where sadness dwells

When Winter comes, and darkness falls

Somber thoughts await us

Of choices made, pathways not taken

And dreams of hope forsaken
