Cold Comfort

Friends and lovers

Oft’ may find

They give too much

Too soon, to bind

I will, I do,

Your name and mine

All mixed in as

Intoxicating wine

On second thought

We pause to see

Initial charm has

Misled thee of me

Cold words have flowed

From an insecure place

Their roots have vanished

Without a trace

But pause fair lady

And consider this,

That one who loves you

Regrets cold wish

As has so cruelly

Boxed you in

A place of blame:

You had no sin!

And now from view

Of deep contrition

Would make things right

Through time’s ambition

So allow me darling

If you would

To work on me

To carve this wood

And make for thee

A better man,

Older, wiser,

With loving plan
