passing thoughts

Watching others come and go

Who shared this life not long ago,

Makes for saddened introspection

Of thoughts that oft escape detection

Thoughts of caring, thoughts of blame,

Thoughts undeserving to be named,

Mixed with thoughts sublimely sweet

That fade away in distant retreat

Thoughts of anger, thoughts of bliss,

Thoughts of opportunities missed,

Thoughts so fearful and insecure,

Only one dared linger at this door

Thoughts of smiling sorrowful eyes,

Thoughts of hastily broken ties,

And thoughts of those, lest we forget,

Who saw within the way of regret

Thoughts of thinly disguised contempt

While spirit’s conscience lay exempt,

Thoughts of why and when and how,

Thoughts of then stillborn in now

The world has turned, the ship has sailed,

Carrying a thousand tearful tales,

Of loving thoughts and best intentions

Turned figment of our imagination
